AS A COUNTRY, we’re pretty obsessed with Father Ted, but somehow we don’t have any Ted-themed pubs.
However, a new Irish bar in Edinburgh may have beaten us to the punch somewhat.
Malones opened last weekend, and its crowning glory is a massive mural dedicated to Father Ted that spans 28 metres. Twenty-eight metres!
It was painted by artist Chris Rutterford, who told The Scotsman that he felt a bit nervous at having to tackle such a beloved subject:
I’ve produced lots of murals over the past few years but this felt a wee bit intimidating – it’s such a classic… I spent a full night ploughing through the shows looking for the thread of the story.
The resulting artwork spans the length of the staircase – 12 metres along one side, and 16 on the other.
As you climb the stairs, you can spot the main men, obviously, but also Eoin McLove, Pat Mustard, Bishop Brennan, and Father Damo:
Father Jack would be delighted to know that he is stationed next to the ladies’ toilets. It’s unclear how the ladies themselves feel about this.
Exquisite. Irish pubs in Ireland, it’s your move…
